Steinbach

Steinbach is one of Manitoba’s larger cities and the main service hub for the province’s southeast, sitting roughly 60–65 km southeast of Winnipeg. It grew out of a Mennonite settlement founded in the 1870s, and that heritage still shapes the town’s character: a strong faith community, many churches, and a reputation for being quiet, tidy and family-focused. At the same time it has become noticeably more diverse, with significant newcomer communities (notably from the Philippines, India, Ukraine and elsewhere) reshaping the population. The 2021 Census recorded 17,806 residents, up about 11% from 2016, and growth has continued since.

The vibe is more "small city" than bedroom suburb: Steinbach has its own full range of shopping, restaurants, healthcare, and a large auto-dealer strip that earned it the "Automobile City" nickname, so residents don’t need to drive to Winnipeg for daily needs. It draws families, tradespeople and people who work locally in manufacturing, retail and services, alongside a smaller number who commute to the city. It tends to suit people who want space, a strong community feel and lower-key surroundings over big-city amenities and nightlife.
