Wolseley

Character homes under the elm canopy, minutes from downtown

Back to the map

Wolseley sits just west of downtown Winnipeg, tucked between Portage Avenue and the Assiniboine River, running from Maryland Street west to Omand's Creek. The area was annexed to Winnipeg in 1882 and built out mainly between 1905 and 1930, and today it is considered one of the most intact pre-1930 residential areas in Canada, known for elm-arched streets and colourful character homes. Since the 1970s it has carried the affectionate nickname of Winnipeg's 'granola belt' for its artsy, community-minded, environmentally conscious streak — still visible in front-yard gardens, an active farmers' market, and the small shops and cafés of Westminster Avenue, including the long-running Tall Grass Prairie Bread Co. bakery. It is a compact, walkable neighbourhood with a strong village feel rather than a suburban one.

Highlights

  • Vimy Ridge Memorial Park, a 2.4-hectare park off Portage Avenue with flower gardens, a wading pool and spray pad, a play structure, and war memorials — including the 44th Battalion monument first erected at Vimy Ridge in France in 1917 and relocated to the park in 1924
  • Robert A. Steen Memorial Community Centre at 980 Palmerston Avenue, with soccer, basketball, baseball and volleyball programs plus drop-in pickleball, chess, yoga, and summer day camps
  • Wolseley Farmers' Market at 160 Ethelbert Street, running Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from early June to late October with local produce, bread, meats, and craft vendors
  • Omand Park and the Omand's Creek Greenway at the neighbourhood's western edge, where a footbridge crosses the creek and paths follow the Assiniboine riverbank and run north toward Polo Park
