Windsor Park

Mid-century bungalow living in Winnipeg's first master-planned suburb

Back to the map

Windsor Park is a post-war neighbourhood in southeast Winnipeg, sitting east of the Seine River and framed roughly by Fermor Avenue to the south, Lagimodière Boulevard to the east, and Elizabeth Road to the north. It holds a real place in the city's history as Winnipeg's first master-planned community: the Ladco homebuilders' group began developing the former St. Boniface farmland in 1955, the community officially opened in September 1956, and it filled out with roughly 3,000 homes plus its own schools, churches, and the Cottonwood shopping area by the late 1950s. Because it grew up within the old City of St. Boniface, a francophone thread runs through it to this day, most visibly in French immersion schooling at Collège Béliveau. The result is a modest, friendly, family-oriented pocket of curving streets, mature trees, and mid-century bungalows with an unusual amount of recreation right on the doorstep.

Highlights

  • Windsor Park Golf Course, an 18-hole municipal course along the Seine River with roots in the 1920s, which each winter becomes the Windsor Park Nordic Centre — roughly 15 km of groomed classic and skate cross-country ski trails, most lit for night skiing, with rentals and lessons
  • Winakwa Community Centre on Winakwa Road, with two hockey rinks, baseball diamonds, an outdoor pool, a community garden, and a playground on grounds shared with Windsor Park Collegiate
  • The Seine River Greenway, a 27-km trail corridor whose Bois-des-Esprits section — a roughly 117-acre riverbank forest dotted with wood-spirit carvings — is a short drive south
  • Collège Béliveau, a Grades 7-12 Louis Riel School Division school that became Western Canada's first French immersion centre when it converted from English in 1982
