Transcona
A proud railway town with small-town heart
Transcona is a well-established community in east Winnipeg with a distinct identity rooted in its railway origins. Founded around the CN rail shops in the early 1900s and a separate town and city until it joined Winnipeg in 1972, it still feels self-contained, with locals proudly calling themselves "Transconians." It's known for a friendly, practical, working-class character, a walkable historic main street, and plenty of green space.
Highlights
- Regent Avenue is the main-street commercial spine, mixing local independents with national chains, coffee spots, and everyday services
- Strong railway heritage on display, including the restored CNR steam locomotive #2747 in Kiwanis Park and the Transcona Museum housed in a historic former fire hall
- Lots of green space and recreation, including Transcona Centennial Square (the community gathering spot with its fountain and Wall of Fame), the Transcona Aquatic Park, and neighbourhood parks and trails
- The annual Hi Neighbour Festival each June is a long-running community tradition, and Kildonan Place mall sits just at the neighbourhood's edge for larger shopping
