Stonewall is an incorporated town of 5,046 people (2021 census, Statistics Canada), sitting about 25 km north of Winnipeg in Manitoba's Interlake region. It is a self-governing census subdivision surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Rockwood, with its own town hall on Main Street. The town grew out of the limestone-quarrying industry that founder Samuel Jacob Jackson started in the early 1880s; the three surviving lime kilns and the old quarry pits are now the centrepiece of Stonewall Quarry Park, which opened on the former quarry site in 1985 and includes Kinsmen Lake, a beach and splash pad, walking and biking trails, a campground, ball diamonds and the Heritage Arts Centre with an interpretive museum.

The draw for buyers is a genuine small town with a real downtown rather than a bedroom subdivision. Stonewall has its own schools, two arenas, grocery and retail along Main Street, medical services and the kind of community calendar — Quarry Days each August being the biggest — that brings the whole town out. It grew 4.9% between the 2016 and 2021 censuses (from 4,809 people), so it is steadily adding households without losing its scale. It suits people who want town amenities and a short, predictable highway commute, and who value a tight community over big-city convenience; it is less suited to anyone who needs to be minutes from a major hospital, a large mall or rapid transit.

Best for

Buyers who want true small-town living — own schools, arenas, a walkable Main Street and an active community calendar — within an easy half-hour commute of Winnipeg. A strong fit for families, retirees and remote/hybrid workers who value community over convenience. Less suited to those who need to be minutes from a major hospital, large shopping centres or city transit, since most errands and services beyond the basics still mean a drive into Winnipeg.

Housing

Housing is overwhelmingly low-density: the town counted 2,127 private dwellings in 2021 (Statistics Canada), mostly single-detached homes on full-size town lots. Established neighbourhoods near Main Street and the quarry park mix older character houses with mid-century and newer infill, while newer subdivisions on the edges of town offer modern single-family builds. Because Stonewall is an incorporated town on municipal water and sewer, lots are residential-sized rather than acreages; buyers wanting larger parcels, hobby farms or country acreages typically look just outside town in the surrounding RM of Rockwood. Getting around

Stonewall is roughly 25 km north of Winnipeg on Provincial Trunk Highway 67, which connects to Highway 7 (a four-lane corridor) for the run into the city — typically about a 30-minute drive to the northern edge of Winnipeg, longer to downtown in rush hour. Like most Interlake communities it is car-dependent: there is no regular commuter transit, so a vehicle is essential for the commute and for trips into the city for major shopping, specialist medical care and the airport.
