St. James
Established West Winnipeg, woven along Portage Avenue
St. James is a long-established residential area in west Winnipeg, stretching south toward the Assiniboine River and north into quiet, tree-lined streets, with the Portage Avenue commercial corridor running through its heart. It's a practical, settled part of the city: mature lots, a real mix of home styles and prices, and easy access to the airport, shopping, and downtown. The broader St. James-Assiniboia district takes in many distinct pockets (Silver Heights, Crestview, Deer Lodge, Bruce Park, Sturgeon Creek and others), so character and price can vary noticeably from street to street.
Highlights
- Green space close at hand: Bruce Park (riverside paths and a war memorial), the Sturgeon Creek and Yellow Ribbon Greenway trails, plus neighbouring Assiniboine Park nearby
- Strong local history and landmarks: the Historical Museum of St. James-Assiniboia (3180 Portage Ave) and Grant's Old Mill on Sturgeon Creek
- Portage Avenue corridor for everyday shopping, dining and services, with Polo Park and the St. James commercial/industrial areas close by
- Recreation and racing: St. James Assiniboia Centennial Pool and civic facilities, and Assiniboia Downs racetrack on the western edge
