Osborne Village
Dense, walkable village living just across the bridge from downtown
Osborne Village is Winnipeg's original urban village, packed onto about 93 hectares between the Assiniboine River and Confusion Corner, directly across the Osborne Street Bridge from downtown and the Manitoba Legislature. It grew out of the historic Fort Rouge district, annexed to Winnipeg in 1882, and by the early 1900s Roslyn Road had become a mansion row while apartment blocks filled the surrounding streets. Today it is the most densely populated neighbourhood in the city, with roughly 12,700 residents at the 2016 census, and in 2012 the Canadian Institute of Planners named it Canada's Great Neighbourhood in its Great Places in Canada contest. Its decades-old Canada Day street festival was retired after 2019, but the Village remains a compact mix of shops, restaurants, arts venues, and apartment living with a character all its own.
Highlights
- The Osborne Street strip, a compact commercial spine of independent shops, restaurants, cafes, and pubs that made the Village's reputation as one of Winnipeg's liveliest walkable districts
- Gas Station Arts Centre, a 232-seat performing arts venue at River Avenue and Osborne Street, currently completing a multi-million-dollar revitalization of its theatre, lobby, and outdoor courtyard backed by federal, provincial, and private funding
- The Manitoba Legislature grounds and the Assiniboine Riverwalk toward The Forks, both reached on foot across the Osborne Street Bridge
- National recognition as Canada's Great Neighbourhood for 2012, awarded by the Canadian Institute of Planners for the Village's shops, turn-of-the-century buildings, and gathering places
