Lorette

A growing francophone-rooted commuter town just southeast of Winnipeg.

Lorette is a local urban district within the Rural Municipality of Taché, about 25 km southeast of Winnipeg along the historic Dawson Trail. Founded by French-speaking Métis settlers and originally called Petite Pointe des Chênes, it retains a distinct francophone and Métis heritage that still shapes its schools and community life. Statistics Canada recorded a population of 3,512 in the Lorette population centre in 2021, up 9.5% from 2016 — steady growth that has brought new subdivisions and amenities while the town keeps a small, semi-rural feel.

In practice it functions largely as a Winnipeg commuter community: many residents work in the city and return to a quieter, family-oriented setting with its own everyday services. The vibe is practical and community-minded rather than trendy — local rinks, a curling club, a golf course, and a community complex anchor social life. Bilingualism (English and French) is common, with English, French-immersion and full-French education options nearby.

Getting around

Lorette is roughly 25–26 km southeast of Winnipeg, about a 25–30 minute drive. The main route is Provincial Road 207 (the historic Dawson Trail), which links to the Trans-Canada Highway and the wider provincial network. It is a car-dependent community, so a vehicle is essentially needed for the daily commute and trips into the city.
