La Salle

A fast-growing bedroom community on the La Salle River, minutes south of Winnipeg.

La Salle is the largest urban centre in the Rural Municipality of Macdonald, along the La Salle River roughly 30 km south of downtown Winnipeg, just off the southwest Perimeter. It functions largely as a commuter town: an active main street with everyday services (gas bar, grocery and hardware store, restaurants, medical and dental clinics, a pharmacy and a financial institution) sits alongside new residential subdivisions. Statistics Canada recorded a population of 2,687 in 2021, up about 30% from 2016 — one of the steeper growth rates in the Capital Region’s commuter belt.

The vibe is suburban-meets-small-town: quiet streets, newer family homes, and a strong volunteer and recreation culture rather than a dense townsite. Residents skew toward families and commuters who want a yard and newer construction while staying within easy reach of Winnipeg’s jobs, shopping and the University of Manitoba. Growth has brought steady development pressure, so expect ongoing construction and an evolving feel rather than a finished, settled town.

La Salle School, a K–8 elementary in the Seine River School Division, which recently completed a roughly $11-million addition adding classrooms, a new gym and a stand-alone child-care centre.
The Caisse Community Centre, the hub of local recreation, with a fitness centre and year-round programming; a large arena addition with an NHL-size year-round ice surface and 400+ seating is slated to open in late 2026.

Housing is dominated by newer single-family homes in ongoing subdivision developments, reflecting the community’s rapid recent growth, alongside some older established homes and a scattering of larger lots and acreages toward the rural edges. Expect a suburban feel — detached homes with garages and yards rather than dense townhouse or condo stock — with new-build inventory regularly coming to market.

Getting around

La Salle is a car-dependent community with no rapid transit. It sits about 30 km south of downtown Winnipeg, reached in roughly 25–35 minutes. The main route is Highway 330, which connects to the southwest Perimeter Highway (PTH 100); the Pembina Highway / Highway 75 corridor and Provincial Road 247 also serve the area, putting south Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus within an easy drive.
