Garden City
Established north-Winnipeg family living around McPhillips and Leila
Garden City is an established residential neighbourhood in north Winnipeg's Seven Oaks area, centred around McPhillips Street and Leila Avenue. It began as one of the city's early master-planned suburbs — plans were announced in 1951 and Model Homes Limited started building the roughly 420-acre community in 1955, complete with schools, parks, and its own shopping centre — and the surrounding Kildonan municipalities joined Winnipeg in the 1972 amalgamation. Today it is a mature, practical part of town where curving streets of mid-century homes sit close to a regional mall, a hospital, and Seven Oaks School Division schools, including Garden City Collegiate on Jefferson Avenue. It is also one of Winnipeg's most multicultural districts, with long-standing Jewish and Ukrainian roots and, in recent censuses, one of the city's largest Filipino-Canadian communities.
Highlights
- Garden City Shopping Centre at McPhillips Street and Leila Avenue, open since 1970 with about 70 stores and 10 restaurants, anchored by Canadian Tire and Winners and home to the Filipino grocer Seafood City Supermarket
- Seven Oaks General Hospital at 2300 McPhillips Street, a community hospital with an urgent care centre, sitting directly across from the mall with entrances off Leila Avenue
- Garden City Community Centre and the Seven Oaks Sportsplex on Kingsbury Avenue, with a 300-person hall, an outdoor soccer complex, and a twin-ice indoor arena added in a recent expansion
- Kildonan Park a short drive east along Leila Avenue at Main Street — a riverside park dating to 1909 with the Rainbow Stage outdoor theatre, the Witch's Hut, formal gardens, a duck pond, and an outdoor pool
