Amber Trails

Newer northwest living built around lakes, trails, and family-sized homes

Back to the map

Amber Trails is one of Winnipeg's youngest large neighbourhoods, tucked into the city's northwest in the Seven Oaks area, north of Leila Avenue with Pipeline Road angling along its edge. The land was still open prairie when developer Genstar broke ground in the early 1990s; the census counted about 130 residents in 1991 and more than 9,000 by 2021, making it one of the city's fastest-growing communities. Curving crescents wrap around three man-made lakes and a network of walking paths, and households here are among the largest in Winnipeg — this is very much a family suburb. It reads as a newer, quieter counterpart to established Garden City to the south, with construction still continuing next door in Amber Gates.

Highlights

  • Amber Trails Community School, a kindergarten-to-Grade 8 school in the Seven Oaks School Division that was the first school in Manitoba certified LEED Platinum and was named Canada's Greenest School in 2017 by the Canada Green Building Council, with on-site child care; older students continue to Maples Collegiate
  • Three man-made retention lakes linked by a walking-path system, plus pocket parks scattered through the neighbourhood such as Ambergate Park and Leila - Strasbourg Park with its playground and picnic shelter
  • Garden City Shopping Centre at McPhillips Street and Leila Avenue, a single-level mall of roughly 70 stores and services anchored by Canadian Tire, Winners, and Seafood City Supermarket, with more retail along the McPhillips corridor
  • Seven Oaks General Hospital about two kilometres away at 2300 McPhillips Street, a community hospital with an urgent care centre open around the clock
